The Lives of Mary and Joseph

Biblical Reference from the Gospel of Luke. This excerpt tells how Mary was a virgin and that the angel Gabriel came and gave her the the gift of baby Jesus. This excerpt also states how Mary was engaged and to be married to Joseph, in line 27 the word "betrothed" is used to say this.

"26
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town
of Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the v
irgin's name was Mary.
28
And coming to her, he said, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you."
29
But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
30
Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
32
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, 11 and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
33
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end."
34
But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?" 12
35
And the angel said to her in reply, "The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
36
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived 13 a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
37
for nothing will be impossible for God."
38
Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.
39
During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah,
40
where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
41
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit,
42
cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
43
And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord 14 should come to me?
44
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
45
Blessed are you who believed 15 that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."
46
And Mary said: 16 "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
47
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
48
For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
49
The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
50
His mercy is from age to age to those who fear him.
51
He has shown might with his arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.
52
He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly.
53
The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty.
54
He has helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy,
55
according to his promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."
56
Mary remained with her about three months and then returned to her home. "  [LK. 1:26-56]

This excerpt from www.allaboutgod.com tells how Joseph is portrayed in the New Testament of the Bible. He is spoken of in the books of Matthew and Luke.

"Joseph, best known as the husband of Mary and earthly father of Jesus, is found in the New Testament books of Matthew and Luke. Joseph was a man of strong beliefs. He not only strived to do what was right but also to do it the right way. When his betrothed Mary came to him with the news of her pregnancy, he knew the child was could not be his.

Joseph decided he would break the engagement but determined to do it in such a way that it would not bring shame to Mary. He wanted to be just, acting with fairness and love. He had great respect for Mary’s character but her story of being miraculously impregnated by God’s Holy Spirit was difficult to believe. During this time of consideration, he was visited by a messenger from God confirming Mary’s story and convincing Joseph that Mary had not been unfaithful. God instructed Joseph to marry the young woman and honor her virginity until the baby was born. Joseph obeyed the Lord.

This must have been initially very difficult for Joseph to reconcile in his natural mind. But Joseph had to be a very spiritual and faithful man of integrity. It is not known how long Joseph was in the life of Jesus but he realized from the moment of the heavenly visit that Jesus was to be very special. The last time Joseph was mentioned in the Bible was when Jesus was 12 years old. We can assume, that being the honorable man he was, Joseph fulfilled the role of earthly father to the best of his ability with all the love any man can have for his son. Joseph was given and fulfilled the role of protector, provider and teacher, raising the young boy without any further reservation. God provided Joseph with assurance, strength, and the abilities of leadership to raise the child who was brought to be Savior."

All about Mary from www.about.com.

"Was Jesus and Illegitimate Child of Mary?:

The synoptic gospels identify Mary as the mother of Jesus. Mark describes Jesus as the “son of Mary.” In Jewish tradition, a man is always identified as the son of his father, even if the father is dead. Mark might not have done this if Jesus’ birth wasn’t legitimate — that his parents weren’t married and, therefore, his biological father wasn’t his “social” father. This may be why Matthew and Luke describe Jesus as the “son of Joseph” — accepting that Jesus could have been illegitimate would not have been any easier then than it is now for believers.

When did Mary live?:

The gospel texts provide no information about when Mary was born or when she died. If, h

owever, Jesus was born in 4 BCE and was her first child, then Mary was likely born no earlier than 20 BCE. Christian traditions have filled in the considerable gaps here by creating numerous stories of Mary's life — stories which, in the end, are probably no less credible than what little information is contained in the gospel texts which were also probably created to fill theological and communal needs.

Where did Mary live?:

The gospel texts describe Jesus’ family as living in Galilee. Luke, Matthew, and John, though, describe her origins as being in Bethlehem, which is in Judea. Contradictions and conflicts like this help support the conclusion that the gospel texts are not reliable about basic factual information and thus cannot be trusted. Too many Christians put absolute faith and confidence in the gospel stories, but there is far less there that can be trusted than most realize.

What did Mary do?:

Mark portrays Mary negatively, showing her as among those who think Jesus is deranged. The other gospel writers depict her more positively and as helping Jesus' ministry in some instances. Luke, for example, places her at the Last Supper with Jesus’ apostles and as one of those who receives the Holy Spirit. The differences in portrayal are likely due to the fact that the stories and characters were all created to fill specific theological and communal needs of the authors, not because they accurately portray anything that occurred. Mark's community was different from Luke's, so they created different tales.

Why was Mary a Virgin?:

In Catholic tradition, Mary is referred to as the Virgin Mary because of the doctrine of her perpetual virginity: even after giving birth to Jesus she never had sexual relations with her husband, Josephus, and never gave birth to more children. Many Protestants also believe that Mary remained a virgin, but for most it’s not a doctrine of faith. References to brothers and sisters of Jesus in the gospels suggest that Mary did not remain a virgin. This is one of m

any cases where traditional Christian doctrine runs into direct conflicts with text in the Bible. Given a choice, most Christians go with tradition.

Cultural Referenc

es of Mary & Joseph in Movies:

( From http://www.christianitytoday.com/movies/commentaries/2006/maryinthemovies.html)

1. The Life and Passion of Jesus Christ (released multiple times between 1902-1905):  An early French film and dramatization of Christ's life and birth. Shows Christ appearing into life in the manger out of thin air as Mary & Joseph pray at his side.

2. Ben-Hur (1925 / 1959): Begins in black & white with Jospeh leading Mary to the inn where Jesus is brought to life and depicts Jospeh more as a paternal figure even to Mary than a lover. It also depicts Mary with doves around her head but as the movie turns from black & white to an early form of technicolor, she is shown with  full halo around her head. It's famous 1959 re-make gives Joseph more dialogue and casts Jesus and Mary in the background.

3. King of Kings (1961): Depicts Mary as being more of an authrotative figure, giving counsel to famous Biblical characters such as John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene and even her son Jesus Christ, himself. She seems to even have a better understanding of what will happen to him after that fateful Passover meal he had.

4. Jesus Christ Superstar & Godspell (1973 / 1973): Showed a very small interest in Mary and Joseph as Jesus' parents as many films of the time dealing with Jesus did. Neither even showed Mary or Joseph but moreso focused on Jesus and his "hippie-like" followers.

5. The Nativity & Mary and Joseph:  A  Story of Faith (1978 / 1979): Emphasize on the romantic love attraction between Mary and Joseph as lovers, which sometimes led to awkward results considering how many films in the past had depicted them as having simply a social contract to be together.

6. The Last Temptation of Christ (1988): A  scene in which Jesus tells Mary he does not have a mother or a family, just a father in heaven, ends with Mary walking off crying and a witness tells her "he had thousands of angels surrounding him" and she replies, "I almost wish there wasn't." This depicts a strange relations

hip in which Jeuss doesn't consider Mary to be his true mother.

7. Jesus & Mary, Mother of Jesus (1979 / 1999): Depicts how Jesus felt his "followers" were his true family: his brothers, sisters, mother, etc. and how Mary feels about this statement that he makes.

8. The Passion of the Christ (2004): Depcits Mary having similar mystical powers to Jesus (seeing Satan among the crowd and being able to feel her son in a dungeon below her). However, it also portrays her as any other mother, unable to bear the pain of watching her son suffer.

Beatles - Let It Be

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,

speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,

speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.

Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,

shine until tomorrow, let it be.

I wake up to the sound of music, mother Mary comes to me,

speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, .....
