  Mary and Joseph

Mary

The Blessed Virgin Mary is a key character in the Gospels. Her importance goes beyond giving birth to Jesus. Mary exemplifies faith because she was willing to accept God’s call.

The Annunciation

Luke 1: 26-38 The angel Gabriel came to Mary in Nazareth. She was engaged to Joseph and was still a virgin. Mary was told that she would be the mother of a son who she should call Jesus and who would be the Son of God. Gabriel said, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’ 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”  She questioned how she could have a child because she was a virgin. Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her. Gabriel also said that Mary’s barren sister Elizabeth would bear a child. Mary humbly accepted God’s will, calling herself “the handmaid of the lord.” Her humility and poverty show how God is kind to the poor.

The Birth of Christ

Luke 2: 1-20 Joseph and Mary travelled together to Bethlehem to be part of the census. While they were there Mary gave birth to Jesus in a manger because there was no room in the inn. An angel came down on local shepherds to tell them of the Messiah’s birth. The shepherds went to Bethlehem to see the newborn Christ. The lowly shepherds are appropriate visitors because God favors the humble and poor.

Matthew 2, 1-12 Matthew’s gospel also accounts Jesus’ birth. His first visitors were three magi sent by King Herod with instructions to return to him. They were guided by a star. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They never returned to Herod because they were warned not to in a dream.

Jesus’ Crucifixion and Resurrection

John 19: 25-27 While Jesus was on the cross Mary, Mary Magdalene, and Peter stood by him. When Jesus saw them he said to Mary “Woman, behold your son.” He then said to Peter, “Behold, your mother.” Jesus shows his love for Mary by having Peter take Mary into her home.

Mary and Joseph

There are many scenes in the Bible in which Mary and Joseph are found together, instead of seperate, like the Annunciation, where the Angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her of the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ or when God came to Jospeh, son of Jacob, to tell him to accept the virgin Mary as his wife.

However, scenes with Mary and Joseph together aren't common, like finding Mary and Jesus together, for a few reasons.  One reason was the Joseph had died early in Jesus's life and was not around for the entirety of Jesus's life as did Mary.  Only the Gospels of Matthew and Luke describe, although briefly, Jesus's early life before his ministry, when Joseph was alive.  The Gospels, and many movies for the matter, have portrayed Jesus as more attached to his mother, Mary, than Joseph, his father.  In the movie, From the Manger to the Cross, as Jesus walks back after being recovered from the Temple in Jerusalem, He is in between Mary and Joseph, but is much closer to Mary, leaving Joseph only to look upon the two.

Although Joseph is portrayed as distant to his spouse and child, he always was there for Jesus and Mary whenever they needed him, as evidenced by Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethelehem when Jesus was in the womb, the struggle to find a proper place for the birth of Jesus Christ, the anxiety of losing Jesus in the vast Temple of Jerusalem, and finally ensuring the safety of Jesus and Mary by fleeing to Egypt to escape King Herald's law.  Mary and Joseph were last seen together in the Bible when Joseph had died.

Journey to Bethelehem

In the Gospel of Luke 2: 1-7, Caesar Augustus, the present Roman king, calls for a census, where all people must enroll in their hometown.  Joseph, being of the lineage of David, took the pregnant Mary to Bethelehem so they can be enrolled.  On the journey, Mary was ready to give birth, and the always dependable Joseph found a suitable place for the birth at a local manger, after all the inns were occupied.

"4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:).... 7And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

Manger

Matthew 2: 1-12   describes another scene in the manger with Mary, Joseph, and the Baby Jesus, as Three Magi were sent by King Herod to respond to the rumors of the birth of a new "king."  The Magi presented the baby Jesus with the three gifts of gold, Frankincense, and myrrh.

"10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

11And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. "

Flight to Egypt

After God warned the Three Magi to not return to King Herod, He appeared to Joseph in a dream and warned him of the future decree of King Herod to kill all infants 2 years of age or less and to take Mary and the newborn Jesus into Egypt until King Herod died and posed no threat to Jesus.  Joseph responded and acted again to protect his spouse and Jesus in Matthew 2:13-15,16,18 and returned to Nazareth when God told him ina dream of the replacement of Herod in Matthew 2: 19-23.

"13And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

14When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt.....18In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not."

The Nativity Story

YouTube plugin error

This is a clip from the movie The Nativity Story. This shows Mary and Joseph traveling through Nazarath while, Mary is pregnant with Jesus. In the beginning of this clip Joseph is trying to find a home that will let him and Mary in. Mary at this time is going through labor and needs a place to be laying down in. Then Joseph carries Mary into a nativity where there are sheep. There are the nativity the three wise men brought three gifts when Jesus was born.

Here are some song lyrics about Mary and Josephs' time in the manger

The Way in the Manger- Paul Brandt

We were alone in the fields with our sheep

A star in the sky glowing bright in the east

When an angelic choir singing all glory be

To god in the highest, bade us come see (they said)

The way in a manger is a babe fast asleep

He's never a stranger to wise men who seek

The light and the hope for all of mankind

He's the way in a the manger

And he's easy to find

Mary and joseph were there when we came

All that the angels had said was the same

And when i saw the baby i knew just what to do

I bowed down to worship the light and the truth

The way in a manger is a babe fast asleep

He's never a stranger to wise men who seek

The light and the hope for all of mankind

He's the way in a the manger

And he's easy to find

The light and the hope

For all of mankind

He's the way in a manger

And he's easy to find

Many different characters in movies show the role that Mary and Joseph play in Jesus' life. One movie called Sissy Duckling represents Mary as the mother of one of the ducklings, Elmer. She never stopped believing in her son.

A book that talks about Mary and Joseph is Two From Galilee: A Story of Mary and Joseph. It is a story about Mary and Joseph whose lives were touched by God. These two people were chosen by God to provide a home for Jesus. The two young teenagers were in love and faced a family conflict. It was a love story about Mary and Jesus just like they were in the Bible.
